Working from home – some people love it, some people hate it but either way, whether you love the lack of a commute or hate missing out on the social aspect of an office, it looks like we’re going to be working from home for a little while longer. What better way to motivate yourself than giving your home desk a revamp.
Around 82% of people believe if they were more organized, it would improve their quality of life – Unfortunately, however, we can’t all be Monica from Friends!. With this in mind, apartment rental brand Essential Living has put together a handy guide on how to redecorate your workspace to suit your personality, making remote working that bit more enjoyable.
If you love being organized, prefer Marie Kondo-style simplicity, and hate clutter, then drawers and shelves will soon become your best friend.
Plenty of desks come with drawers built-in, or shelves attached to keep your main workspace tidy and organized. However, if you’re working with limited space – or not a fan of large, clunky desks – wall shelves are a handy way of making sure you have everything you need simultaneously in arms reach, yet out of the way.
You can also use a peg-board, which allows you to prop up and display anything you might need as you would with shelves (you can even attach shelves to some of them!) – a pegboard is also a perfect alternative if you’re in a rented property, as they can be easily rested against a wall – either at the back or side of the desk or stuck up with command strips.
There’s so much fun to be had if you’re a fan of colorful and quirky workspaces. If you’re an artistic and creative individual, no doubt your home already has a unique decorative spin – bring your individuality to your desk! Decorate with colorful prints, novelty trinkets, and unique storage solutions such as colorful baskets, and geometric shelves.
You can also ‘flip’ or ‘upcycle’ your office furniture for a refresh in time for the new year. Those boring white shelves you have? Paint them a bright illuminating yellow (Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2021). Is your desk still looking a little too plain? You can purchase vinyl wrap in different patterns and colors to brighten up your workspace without the effort, or irreversible damage of paint.
If you opt for more of an elegant and sophisticated path in life, you’re likely to love a classic wood desk with brushed metal finishings accessorized with functional yet sophisticated storage solutions, and stylish prints. You could maybe even decorate with a classic ‘coffee table’ book, and one (or a few!) plants – which are scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety, perfect for those long and busy days.
With a stylish and sleek workspace you also probably don’t want a huge, chunky black office chair ruining the look – you can opt for a cushioned velvet chair in a glamorous shade for grey, navy or taupe to match your muted but classy style, which is just as practical, equally as comfortable and blends right in!
If you consider yourself a retro aesthetic addict, we know you’ll love a vintage workspace, including old period-Esque desks, with dark, varnished wood and brass finishing or even a classic secretary desk. Perfect vintage-style decor should include candles, old books, antique lamps or globes.
Similar to if you wanted a sleek, and elegant workspace – a classic office chair looks completely out of place if accompanied by a victorian-style desk, choose a cushioned wooden chair – or even a velvet chair if you want to feel a little more regal!
